When it came to planning how I wanted to celebrate my 40th birthday, it was always going to involve a beautiful hotel, a spa, and my two best friends. Sopwell House ticked every box and then some. Their rooms can sleep up to four, making it the perfect choice for a luxury sleepover with your favourite people.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit Sopwell House a few times before for dinner and afternoon tea (which, by the way, is one of the best around). I already knew how gorgeous it was. But this time, I wanted the full experience... spa, stay, food and all the pampering.

First Impressions
Sopwell House always feels special the moment you walk through the doors. The foyer is beautifully done, freshly refurbished and gives you those instant ‘ooh this is nice’ vibes.
Check-in was quick, friendly and our room was ready straight away, which was ideal as we were keen to get straight into our spa robes. It was a warm Saturday in June, the sun was shining, and the staff couldn’t have been lovelier or more helpful.
The Room – The Mews at Sopwell
We stayed in The Mews, a private, gated area separate from the main hotel, which feels exclusive and tucked away, perfect for a girly getaway. One of the big perks of staying here is it automatically gives you access to The Club at Cottonmill, their award-winning spa within a spa.
Our room was spacious and beautifully designed, with a little private patio and hot tub (which we 100% made the most of). Inside, there was a double bed, a double sofa bed, Sky TV, a fireplace, and a lovely welcome touch of drinks and macarons. The bathroom was gorgeous too. Everything about it felt thoughtful and luxurious.
The Spa – Club at Cottonmill
The spa here is genuinely one of the best I’ve experienced. You’ve got the standard spa facilities open to all guests, but The Club at Cottonmill takes things up a level. It’s serene, stylish and feels incredibly exclusive.
We spent the afternoon sunbathing; there were plenty of loungers, hot tubs and beautifully kept gardens. You can bring drinks outside, but one small downside was that they don’t serve food poolside, a little snack would have been nice without having to head inside. That said, there’s a spa lounge where you can stay in your robe and relax with food and drinks, so it wasn’t a big issue.
We all had treatments during our stay and I can hand-on-heart say it was the best facial I’ve ever had. It felt indulgent, relaxing, and exactly what a milestone birthday should include.

Food & Drink
Sopwell House has a few restaurants, we ate in the Brasserie for dinner. I had mussels and fries, my friends had beef and mash. Everything was beautifully cooked, well-presented and served with a smile.
Breakfast the next morning was a brilliant buffet with loads of choice, and I already knew from previous visits that their afternoon tea is absolutely worth booking.
Family-Friendly?
Sopwell House isn’t really set up for children and that’s honestly part of its charm. It’s much more about couples, friends, and grown-up getaways where peace, quiet, and spa days take centre stage.
Who’s It For?
If you’re looking for somewhere to go with your partner, your best friends, or even a solo treat, Sopwell House delivers every time. It’s stylish, luxurious and feels like a proper escape without having to travel far.
Final Thoughts – Would I Go Back?
Absolutely. Without hesitation. It was one of the best spa stays I’ve ever had and I’m already looking forward to a return visit. If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate a birthday, unwind with friends, or just treat yourself to some well-deserved calm, Sopwell House won’t disappoint.
